About the Mammut Smarter
The Smarter Package from Mammut is the ideal combination for flawless, safe belaying. The Smart 2.0 offers intuitive auto-assisted locking and combined with the Smarter, it reduces the risk of human error, whilst the Smart HMS is a secure screw gate carabiner with a key lock for security.
The Smart 2.0
The Mammut Smart 2.0 operates similarly to the predecessor of the Smart, but with significant improvements for optimised convenience.
The user-friendly Smart 2.0 has no moving parts or leavers, and with the lack of a mechanical interface, the device weighs only 80g! The auto-assisted braking has been redesigned for the Smart 2.0, a newly developed brake insert interacts seamlessly with the belay carabiner to block the climbing rope as appose to just assisting the braking.
Operating on the tube principle with optimised geometry the smart 2.0 offers a convenient means of paying out and taking in rope. Consequently, the device is ideal for both top rope and lead climbing. In addition, the Smart 2.0 features a two-part handle, which is soft to the touch and provides an improved grip.
A great alternative to the standard devices being used as it weighs the same as most manual ATC’s which do not have an auto-assisted locking mechanism. Moreover, compared to other auto-locking devices such as the Grigri 2, the Smart 2.0 is lighter and more affordable making it a great value alternative.
The Smart 2.0 can be used with all standard HMS carabiners. However, Mammut has designed the Smart 2.0 to be symbiotically operated with their Smart HMS carabiner. The pair of devices used in combination are ideally coordinated to offer the most flawless performance. The Smart 2.0 offers smooth handling and is rated for ropes from 8.7 to 10.5mm so will operate well with skinny ropes right up to burly indoor gym ropes.
Smarter
The Smarter is an add-on for the Smart 2.0 that reduces the risk of human error.
Human error is the main cause of risk whilst climbing, with the Smarter the device increases safety regardless of misuse of the belayer.
Belay devices that operate on the tube principle, such as the Smart 2.0 have one downfall, the higher up the breaking hand the less braking force the device has that could result in serious injury to the climber. The Smarter clips onto the Smart 2.0, and separates the lead and braking rope, ensuring neither is parallel. Consequently, the device ensures the Smart 2.0 will trigger in the event of a fall regardless of the height of the braking hand.
Smarter does not activate the Smart 2.0 unless misuse or user error occurs in the event of a fall, moreover, it does not compromise normal rope handling.
Smarter offers situations requiring greater safety, such as beginners and children, a means of reducing risk. It can be removed if required and attached to a climbing harness via the integrated loop or removed completely once competent rope-handling skills have been achieved.
Smart HMS
The Smart HMS is a traditional screw gate carabiner but features a keylock, where the gate-to-nose interface is un-notched removing the issue of snagging. The safety gate is a rubber insert that prevents the gate from opening, moreover, it removes the risk of cross-loading where the carabiner could twist in the belay loop of the harness. This is a really safe locking biner, great for kids, and beginners and appreciated by climbers of all levels as its design forces safety checks that will fall into place every time.
